Palapalai Fern / Microlepia strigosa

Palapalai is an indigenous fern that is easy to grow and maintain in gardens, as a houseplant and in landscaping. It can be found on all main Hawaiian islands though it is usually found in mesic forests up to an elevation of 5,000ft.

This fern continues to be an essential part of lei work today much as it was historically used by Hawaiians. Culturally significant, its fronds are used in Hula as various adornments.

It is also known to have medicinal properties. Its population in the wild is considered stable.
