Giant Clam / Tridacna gigas

Giant clams are culturally and ecologically important organisms in the Solomon Islands. Culturally, they serve as a source of food and craftsmanship. The shells were even used as currency in the past. Ecologically, they filter water, contribute to the carbonate reef framework, provide shelter and habitat, provide food for opportunistic feeders, and are a food source for predators and scavengers. There are 7 known species of giant clams from the genera Tridacna and Hippopus found in the Solomon Islands and nearly all of them are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species and protected by national and international law.
Around the globe they have been over-harvested for food, their shells, and for the aquarium market. To help conserve these species, many countries, including the Solomon Islands, have started nurseries to raise and restock giant clams in hopes of restoring their populations. This pin represents the largest giant clam, Tridacna gigas, whose shell can grow to over one meter wide.
