Kawainui Marsh / "The Great Water"
Kawainui Marsh represents the largest remaining wetland in the State of Hawai'i.
Proper management and restoration of Kawainui Marsh is critical to maintaining and improving the environment required by endangered and threatened native wetland birds.
Featured in this pin is the Kōlea or 'Pacific Golden-Plover', a native migratory shorebird. It stands alongside A'ali'i, an indigenous plant that was historically abundant in the area.
Illustrated on this backing card is Makaloa, an indigenous wetland sedge prized for producing the softest, finest woven mats in Hawai'i.
